So, been writing a quick and dirty Maya MEL script to extract hair curves from NURBS surfaces. Idea is to model the base hair as simple NURBS geometry for the hairstyle, and then extract a series of  spline curves to be grouped together and attached to an existing simulated hair system in Maya. As the hair direction from the geometry can be aligned in U or V, I've added a switch to select which one is desired. So far, seems to do the trick- and seems to allow come pretty complex hairstyles to be made quite easily (weaves, braids, etc). Will post some experiments soon.
